This Play-Doh is especially fun for play because its brown color resembles lots of different foods. It’s perfect for teaching children how to knead dough, make pie lattices, etc., without worrying that your real dough is getting compromised during the learning process.

homemade play-doh ingredients

First and foremost, gather all your ingredients. The ingredients for this recipe are probably already in your pantry. All you’ll need is all-purpose flour, salt, cocoa powder, cinnamon, cream of tartar, coconut oil (or oil of choice), and water!

Next, combine all the dry ingredients in a big bowl. Add your coconut oil on top and pour the boiling water over it. Give the oil time to melt if it isn’t already melted. Combine everything with a mixing utensil. Once the mixture has cooled slightly, knead the Play-Doh on a clean surface until no residue sticks to your hands. If you want a Play-Doh with a little more shine and stretch, add 4 drops of glycerin to the mixture.

Troubleshooting

If the mixture is too sticky, add some more flour. If the mixture is too dry and crumbly, add more water, a little bit at a time.

How to Store Homemade Play-Doh

We have personally used and stored our Play-Doh in old gelatin containers. We use them to store other children’s arts and crafts items, as well (crayons, markers, etc). It’s a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle! It’s also nice because the containers are hard plastic, so no need to worry about breakage if the container drops while getting the Play-Doh out. Additionally, we have also used quart Mason jars to store our Play-Doh. Use whatever you have and what works best for you!

Does homemade Play-Doh need to be refrigerated? No, it does not. You can store it at room temperature, but make sure it’s sealed in an air-tight container to prevent it from drying out while not in use.

How long does homemade Play-Doh last? If stored properly, homemade Play-Doh can last for a long time! Usually it’s good for six months, but we’ve also been able to preserve our homemade Play-Doh for a year!
