Tallow Sunscreen
Tallow in skin care is incredibly nourishing and packed with fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants. It is a safe and non-toxic skincare option to use for children and adults alike. I have always made homemade skin care products since my first son was born and not only do I use tallow in our multi-purpose family cream, but I also use it in our homemade tallow sunscreen. We don’t use sunscreen on a daily basis but we like to have it on hand when we spend extra time in the sun. I like to call this a “sun créme” rather than “sunscreen” because of all the beneficial skin-supportive ingredients.

Why We Don’t Use Commercial Sunscreens
Commercial sunscreens contain a lot of toxic, hormone-disrupting ingredients. Some research even shows that the ingredients found in commercial sunscreens could actually promote skin cancer. Not only that, but many “safer” sunscreens contain oils that quickly oxidize when they come in contact with heat (aka the sun), causing premature aging. These are some of the many reasons why I choose to make my own sunscreen for my family.

Tallow Sun Créme Ingredient Highlights:
Grass-fed tallow: rich in vitamins (A, D, E, K) and fatty acids, deep hydration that strengthens the skin barrier, natural anti-inflammatory properties
Virgin coconut oil: packed with antioxidants (which combats free-radicals), antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, deeply moisturizing, supports tissue regeneration
Beeswax: a natural humectant, meaning it attracts water to the skin and helps retain it (hydration), a protective skin barrier, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-bacterial, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants, which can help promote skin regeneration and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Jojoba oil: a natural emollient (softens and smooths the skin by sealing in moisture), balances oil production (beneficial for those with oily or acne-prone skin), anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, hydrating and antioxidant properties that can help to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Non-nano zinc oxide: provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays, creates a physical barrier on the skin, reflecting and scattering UV radiation before it can penetrate, reef-safe, meaning it is less likely to harm marine life like coral reefs compared to some chemical sunscreen ingredients, has been shown to promote wound healing and tissue regeneration, can help reduce inflammation and soothe skin conditions like eczema and sunburn
When making homemade skin care products I like to have separate bowls and utensils just for that. The reason being is that when working with beeswax it can be incredibly hard to clean off once it cools. Another reason is that it ensures you don’t cross-contaminate with your regular cooking pans and utensils.
